How to Rethink Your Marketing Strategy Without Starting Over
During a quiet stretch, I spent some 1:1 time with my stepdaughter, Alexis. She’s ten. Curious. Bright. Full of huge feelings and even bigger dreams.
One phrase kept coming up:
“I wish.”
“I wish I was better at this.”
“I wish it was easier.”
“I wish today felt different.”
And it reminded me how easy it is, even from a young age, to wish things were different instead of seeing what’s already working and what’s really needed next.
What Roller Skating Can Teach You About a Marketing Strategy
We were roller skating together when I saw the whole process unfold in real time.
She tried a new trick she’d seen online
She felt frustrated when it didn’t click instantly
She convinced herself she was worse at skating than before
But that wasn’t true. She hadn’t regressed.
She just skipped a few key steps in the middle.
She was ready for the next level, but she hadn’t built the skills to support the leap.
And because she was right in it, she couldn’t see that clearly.
This is exactly what I see in business owners whose marketing strategy feels off. Not broken, just too close and too fast.
You’re Not Stuck, You’re Just Too Close
I work with a lot of service providers, creatives, and founders who live deep in their vision.
They want to grow. They’ve been showing up. But when progress stalls, they start assuming something’s wrong.
Most of the time? Nothing’s broken.
They’ve just skipped steps they didn’t know they needed
They’re trying to jump to the next level without recalibrating or building new systems
And because they’re too close to it, they can’t see where the gap really is
This isn’t about working harder. It’s about stepping back and seeing the whole picture, then adjusting your growth strategy accordingly.
The Shift That Creates Clarity
Here’s one question that can help you get out of the weeds:
“If someone else were describing this exact situation to me, what would I immediately see that they can’t?”
This is one of my favorite clarity tools. It pulls you out of emotional overwhelm and into an observational role, just like you'd be for a friend or client.
It works because:
You're less emotionally attached to someone else’s situation
You’re quicker to identify simple fixes when you’re not wrapped up in self-judgment
You naturally connect dots for others that feel impossible to see for yourself
How to Reset Your Marketing Strategy Without Starting From Scratch
Try this quick clarity check:
Write a few bullet points describing what feels stuck
Read them as if they came from a peer or client
Ask yourself: What would I say to help them move forward?
What usually surfaces is one of three things:
A missing system or skill
A lack of clarity around the actual goal
A disconnect between the offer and the current marketing strategy
That lens shift doesn’t just offer insight, it gives you a next step.
And that’s how real momentum begins.
The Truth About Progress That No One Wants to Hear
When business owners hit a plateau, they often assume they’ve failed.
But here’s what’s actually happening:
You’ve outgrown the level you were operating on. Now your growth strategy needs to catch up with where you’re headed.
It’s not regression. It’s expansion.
That might look like:
You’ve built consistent sales, but your systems can’t keep up with delegation
You’re getting inquiries, but your messaging isn’t pulling in the right clients
You’ve got demand, but no boundaries, which is leading to burnout, not sustainable growth
These aren’t problems. They’re signals that it’s time to build stronger foundations and new muscles for where you’re going next.
A Few Questions to Help You Diagnose:
What skills or systems got me here? Are they still enough for where I want to go?
What do I keep avoiding in my business that might need attention?
What support would help me make the leap without running myself into the ground?
Progress often looks like discomfort.
Not because you're doing it wrong, but because you're expanding.
You Don’t Need to Burn It Down
If you're in the messy middle, where nothing feels broken but everything feels off, pause.
You probably don’t need:
A full rebrand
To burn down your current offer
Or to start from scratch
What you do need is clarity.
Ask yourself:
What’s actually working?
What’s no longer aligned?
What’s one small, honest step I can take that supports where I want to go?
That one step might be the beginning of a reset that makes your entire marketing strategy feel lighter and more aligned.
Perhaps it’s rephrasing your message to better reflect who you truly want to attract.
Maybe it’s simplifying your services so your energy supports your growth strategy instead of draining it.
Either way, you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.
